Navigating Job Interviews in Digital Marketing.
Interviews used to terrify me. When I first started out as a digital marketer, I had interviews that left me with knots in my stomach. Some ended in tears, others were complete disasters—I fumbled, stammered, and made mistakes. There were kind interviewers who tried to ease my nerves, and others who saw my use of filler words as disrespectful.
But as I progressed in my career, things changed. I started having amazing interviews—the kind where I walked out knowing I nailed it. Sometimes, I’d even be told I was a perfect fit, but the salary I asked for was beyond their budget. So, how did I go from being a nervous wreck to acing interviews with confidence?
That’s exactly what we’ll be exploring in today’s newsletter.
Embrace the Learning Curve: The first step in overcoming my fear was accepting that interviews are a skill. Just like any other skill, it requires practice and patience. Each interview, whether successful or not, became a learning experience. I started to reflect on what went wrong and what went right. This self-awareness allowed me to improve over time.
Do Your Research: I never go into an interview without knowing about the organization. As a digital marketer, your top priority is understanding the company’s business and how to communicate its value effectively. I make it a point to study what the company does, identify areas where they're excelling, and note where they can improve. Bringing this insight into the conversation shows interviewers that you are invested in their growth and have something valuable to offer.
Compliments: There's always something worth complimenting—their response time, website design, even the interviewer's smile (if it’s a physical or video interview). In one interview, I complimented the way an interviewer spoke, and it immediately endeared her to me. Compliments help create a relaxed atmosphere and can soften even the toughest interviewers.
Know Your Stuff And Be Confident: You can’t wing it in an interview. Start by thoroughly reviewing the job description and understanding what the company is looking for. Research their competitors too, and think about how you can bring fresh ideas. Interviewers also want to hear about your past experience, particularly challenges you’ve faced and how you overcame them. They’re assessing your problem-solving skills, communications and interpersonal skills so be ready to discuss your most and least successful campaigns—and what you learned from them.
Change the Narrative: Instead of seeing interviews as high-stakes tests, I started viewing them as conversations. This shift in mindset was crucial. I realized that interviews are not just about proving myself but also about assessing if the company is the right fit for me. This two-way street approach reduced the pressure.
Build Confidence Through Experience: With each interview, I grew more confident. I learned to sell my strengths and address my weaknesses honestly. Over time, the nervousness that once consumed me turned into excitement. I began to see interviews as opportunities rather than obstacles. And while I may not always know the perfect way to answer “Tell me about yourself,” my confidence and conversational approach always kept them engaged.
